A Shorter and Smoother Commute

The 13.3-kilometre stretch will replace the existing 19.8-kilometre route, reducing the total distance between Khopoli exit and Sinhgad Institute by 5.7 kilometres. Managed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the ₹6,600 crore project is set to ease the heavy traffic flow on the expressway, which currently accommodates around 60,000 vehicles daily.

The New Deadline

“We have completed 92% of the work, and the remaining tasks are on schedule. We intend to begin operations by September,” said an MSRDC official, reported Oneindia.

Cutting-Edge Infrastructure Features

A major highlight of the project is the construction of Asia’s widest tunnel, spanning 23.30 meters. The twin tunnels will feature:
Four lanes each
Emergency lanes
The longest tunnel stretching 8.87 km

Additionally, the development includes a 650-meter cable-stayed bridge and two bridges near Khopoli to facilitate smooth connectivity.

Toll Charges and Traffic Regulations

For now, toll charges will remain unchanged, though revisions will occur every three years as per standard practices. Initially, toll collection was set to conclude by 2030, but an extension is under discussion.

While the existing ghat road will stay open, vehicles carrying hazardous materials must use the older route instead of the new link.

A Long-Awaited Relief for Commuters

Originally scheduled for completion in March 2024, the project faced multiple delays since construction began in March 2019 to be finally opened to public by September 2025. However, once fully operational, it will significantly reduce congestion, enhance road safety, and improve overall connectivity between Mumbai and Pune.

With the finish line in sight, the expressway’s ‘Missing Link’ is set to transform travel between the two cities, making daily commutes smoother and more efficient.
