In a major boost to regional connectivity and easing traffic congestion, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced the construction of two elevated corridors linking the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink (MTHL) and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Rs 1,100-crore project, slated for completion by February 2027, promises to transform travel and boost economic growth in the region.

The project includes two key corridors: a 4,958-metre-long elevated stretch from Chirle to Gavan Phata and a 1,700-metre-long corridor from Palaspe Phata to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Both corridors will feature six lanes and are designed to streamline traffic flow, particularly on the heavily congested NH-348 and NH-48 highways.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, highlighted the transformative impact of the project. “By seamlessly integrating Atal Setu (MTHL) with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, we are ensuring efficient traffic dispersal and eliminating bottlenecks at critical junctions,” he said. The project will also include the reconstruction of service roads and the widening of NH-48 to six lanes, further enhancing accessibility.

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune, making it feasible for professionals to work in Mumbai while residing in Pune. This improved connectivity is anticipated to unlock new economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for residents in the region.

Currently, excavation work is underway, marking the beginning of this ambitious infrastructure development. The project is being executed by Gawar Construction Ltd at a cost of Rs 1,102.75 crore.

Once completed, the elevated corridors will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also strengthen Maharashtra’s position as an economic powerhouse, accelerating growth in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
