Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that all Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) exams, including technical and agriculture-related courses, will now be conducted in Marathi. This decision comes after Shiv Sena MLA Milind Narvekar raised the issue in the Legislative Council, questioning why certain exams, particularly in engineering and agriculture, were being held only in English.

Fadnavis clarified that while most MPSC exams are already conducted in both Marathi and English, technical and agriculture-related exams were an exception due to the unavailability of Marathi textbooks. He explained that the matter had previously been discussed in court, which acknowledged the lack of study materials in Marathi as a valid reason for conducting these exams in English.

However, the state government has now decided to address this gap. Fadnavis stated, “Even if the textbooks are not currently available, the new education policy allows us to conduct engineering and technical courses in Marathi. We will prepare the necessary study materials in Marathi and create a time-bound plan to implement this change. Soon, all MPSC exams, including technical ones, will be conducted in Marathi.”

This decision is expected to benefit Marathi-medium students who often face challenges competing in English-dominated technical and professional exams. It also aligns with the state government’s efforts to promote Marathi as a medium of education and administration.

The announcement has been welcomed by advocates of regional language education, who see it as a step toward empowering students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
