India has showcased an impressive performance by outpacing developed nations like the UK and Japan in terms of mobile download speed. A key driver behind this significant rise is the nationwide launch of 5G services. The introduction of 5G has magnified India’s speed capabilities, elevating the nation 72 positions higher, now ranking 47th in the Speedtest Global Index by Ookla. This places India ahead of formidable counterparts like Japan, the UK, Brazil, and even some of its neighboring countries.
Comparison with Global Peers
In the latest rankings, India not only surpassed nations such as Japan (58th), the UK (62nd), Brazil (50th), and South Africa (48th) but also outperformed neighbors like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Furthermore, India stands tall over other G20 nations, including Mexico (90th) and Turkey (68th).
Top 10 Nations Leading the Mobile Speed Race
According to Ookla, the countries boasting the fastest mobile speeds currently are:
- UAE (210.89 mbps)
- Qatar (192.71 mbps)
- Kuwait (153.86 mbps)
- Norway (134.45 mbps)
- Denmark (124 mbps)
- China (122.89 mbps)
- South Korea (120.08 mbps)
- Macau (SAR) (112.33 mbps)
- Iceland (110.02 mbps)
- Netherlands (107.42 mbps)
India’s Journey: From 119th to 47th Place
Ookla highlighted that since the onset of 5G, India’s mobile speed performance experienced a surge by 3.59 times. Specifically, median download speeds shot up to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023 from a mere 13.87 Mbps in September 2022. Such advancements have played a pivotal role in India’s upward trajectory in the global mobile speed rankings.

The deployment of 5G services has undoubtedly enriched the user experience across India. Major telecom giants like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have significantly expanded their 5G subscriber base, pioneering the 5G revolution since October 2022 post the procurement of 5G spectrum licenses.
State-wise 5G Speed Variations
As the networks underwent development, median download speeds varied considerably, from 512.57 Mbps in Gujarat to 19.23 Mbps in Uttar Pradesh West. Some regions even recorded speeds below 100 Mbps due to the early stages of network testing. However, by August 2023, all telecom circles saw median 5G speeds crossing the 240 Mbps threshold. Notably, Kolkata emerged as the front-runner with a median mobile download speed of 385.50 Mbps, as per Ookla’s insights.
