Matheran, one of Maharashtra’s most loved hill stations, is reportedly set to shut down for tourists indefinitely starting March 18, 2025. According to various media reports, local residents, under the banner of the Matheran Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, have called for a complete shutdown in protest against alleged fraudulent practices by some horse traders at the tourist entry point. However, there has been no official confirmation from the government or the local administration regarding this decision.

Allegations of Tourist Fraud Spark Protest

Several reports claim that tourists visiting Matheran were being misled and overcharged by a section of horsemen operating near the Dasturi Naka entrance. It is alleged that despite repeated complaints from locals to the authorities, no action has been taken, prompting the protest.

Media reports suggest that many rickshaw pullers, shopkeepers and many hoteliers are supporting the protest, even at the risk of loosing their livelihood.

A social media post from a recent tourist reportedly highlighted deceptive practices, further fueling the discontent among residents. According to reports, a formal complaint was submitted to the Revenue Department, Municipality, Forest Department, and Police Administration on February 27, but no significant measures were implemented. Following a failed meeting between locals and the authorities, the indefinite shutdown was reportedly announced.

Uncertainty Around the Shutdown

While the reports of the shutdown have gained traction, it remains unclear whether all businesses in Matheran will participate or if the decision has administrative backing. Some local tourism operators and hoteliers have expressed concerns about the economic impact of such a move, given Matheran’s dependence on tourism.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the Matheran Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, the district administration, or the state government confirming or denying the reports. Visitors planning trips to Matheran should stay updated with official announcements before making travel arrangements.
