Maruti Suzuki Confirms Discontinuation of the Ciaz Sedan After a Decade of Sales in India

Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest carmaker, has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the Ciaz sedan. The model, which once competed with rivals like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, and Skoda Slavia, was first launched in 2014 but has now been phased out due to shifting market trends.
Why Was the Ciaz Discontinued?
Partho Banerjee, Maruti’s Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales, stated that the decision was based on market demand and customer feedback. “From time to time, we revalidate our product portfolio. With respect to the Ciaz, we have decided to stop production and will reassess based on future market requirements,” he explained. Banerjee also hinted that strong brands like the Baleno have seen body style changes over time, suggesting that the Ciaz could potentially return in a different form.
Declining Sales and Market Shift to SUVs
Industry experts point out that the Ciaz struggled due to infrequent updates, while competitors offered more advanced features. Additionally, the sedan segment in India has been shrinking, now accounting for just 10% of total passenger vehicle sales, compared to SUVs, which dominate with a 55% market share.
Sales figures reflect this decline—Maruti sold 15,869 units in FY22, which dropped to 8,402 units in FY25. Priced between ₹9.41 lakh and ₹12.47 lakh (ex-showroom), the Ciaz came with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and hybrid tech, but it wasn’t enough to sustain buyer interest in an SUV-driven market.
With the Ciaz’s exit, Maruti Suzuki will likely focus more on its popular SUVs like the Brezza and Grand Vitara, while sedan lovers may have to turn to rival brands for their next purchase.
