Maharashtra Makes FASTag Mandatory for Toll Payments on State Highways, Doubles Penalty for Cash and Card Users

In a decisive move to promote digital transactions and reduce traffic congestion, the Maharashtra government has announced that FASTag or e-Tag will be the only accepted payment methods at toll booths across the state starting April 1. Motorists opting for cash, credit/debit cards, or other non-digital payment methods will face double the toll charges.
The directive, issued on Friday, applies to toll collection centers on roads developed under public-private partnerships (PPP). Currently, FASTag is mandatory only on national highways, while state highways still allow alternative payment methods such as cash, smart cards, PoS systems, and QR codes. However, the new rule aims to create a uniform digital toll collection system across Maharashtra, ensuring smoother transactions and faster movement at toll plazas.
This decision is expected to significantly reduce waiting times at toll booths, as FASTag enables automatic deductions without the need for vehicles to stop. The government also hopes this move will encourage more motorists to adopt digital payment methods, aligning with the broader push for a cashless economy.
While the move has been welcomed by many for its potential to streamline traffic, some commuters have expressed concerns about the increased charges for those who may not have access to FASTag or face technical issues. Authorities have urged motorists to adopt FASTag at the earliest to avoid inconvenience and additional costs.
