Maharashtra Government Ramps Up Security at Bus Stands for Women’s Safety

In a major move to enhance passenger safety, Maharashtra’s Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed an immediate inspection of all bus stands and depots across the state. The initiative comes as part of the government’s intensified focus on women’s safety at public transport hubs.
Strengthening Security at Bus Stands
The state transport department has taken several concrete measures to bolster security. Among the key steps announced:
- More Women Security Guards: The number of female security guards at bus stands will be increased to ensure a safer environment for women passengers.
- Strict Monitoring of Vehicles: Unregistered buses and vehicles seized at transport hubs will be removed by April 15.
- AI-Based Surveillance System: An AI-powered security system will be installed at all State Transport (ST) bus stands and depots for real-time monitoring.
- Enhanced CCTV & GPS in Buses: New buses will be equipped with CCTV cameras, and the installation of GPS tracking systems will be expedited.
- Police Patrols & Vigilance: Patrolling at bus stands will be increased with the help of the police, ensuring constant surveillance.
Administrative Reforms for Better Security
To further tighten security at bus stands, the State Transport Corporation will appoint a Chief Security and Vigilance Officer. A proposal has been sent to the Home Department to assign an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer to the vacant position.
Additionally, the depot managers will be required to stay at the depot accommodation to ensure round-the-clock supervision. Every ST employee working at bus stands will be issued an ID card, and security personnel will register every bus entering depots. Suspicious individuals loitering around transport hubs will also be monitored closely.
Passenger Facilities and Hygiene Measures
The government has also pledged to improve cleanliness standards at bus stands while ensuring the availability of quality facilities for passengers. Notably, the plan includes the construction of women’s toilets at every bus stand to provide better amenities for female commuters.
With these initiatives, the Maharashtra government aims to make public transport safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly.
