Maharashtra Extends Liquor Shop Timings Until Midnight on Holi to Curb Illegal Sales

In a move to facilitate safe and regulated Holi celebrations, the Maharashtra government has extended the operating hours of liquor shops across the state until midnight on Holika Dahan, the eve of Holi. This decision, announced by the state excise department, aims to curb the sale of illegal and counterfeit alcohol, which often sees a surge during the festival.
A senior excise department official stated, “To prevent bootlegging and the circulation of illicit liquor during the festival, the government has allowed licensed wine and beer shops to operate for extended hours on Holi.” The temporary extension overrides the usual 10:30 PM closing time, permitting outlets in areas without dry day restrictions to remain open until 12 AM.
The order ensures that customers can purchase sealed bottles from authorized shops until midnight, providing a legal and regulated supply of alcohol for those celebrating at home or within their communities. This measure has been implemented over the past two years and has proven effective in reducing the activities of bootleggers and illicit liquor traders.
However, the extension does not apply to regions where local authorities have declared a dry day. Alcohol sales remain prohibited in districts like Wardha and Gadchiroli, and certain areas in the Marathwada region may also face restrictions due to legal orders.
As Maharashtra gears up for Holi 2025, the extended liquor shop timings reflect the state’s commitment to ensuring public safety while addressing the challenges posed by illegal alcohol sales.
