In a significant step toward expanding Pune’s metro network, Maha-Metro has invited bids to appoint a detailed design consultant (DDC) for 14 elevated stations on the Kharadi-Khadakwasla and Nal Stop-Manik Baug corridors. These corridors are part of the ambitious Pune Metro Phase 2 project, which aims to enhance urban connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the city.

The 14 stations include eight on the Kharadi-Khadakwasla corridor, stretching from Deshpande Udyan to Khadakwasla, and six on the Nal Stop-Manik Baug corridor, connecting Nal Stop to Daulat Nagar. The appointed consultant will be responsible for the architectural and structural design of the stations, along with integrating advanced systems such as electrical and mechanical services, fire safety, plumbing, sewage management, and building management systems. Additionally, the design will focus on sustainability, incorporating solar panels and aiming for green building certification (IGBC).

One of the unique aspects of this project is the exploration of commercial opportunities within the station premises. The consultant will identify potential spaces for retail outlets, advertisement panels, kiosks, and vending machines to generate additional revenue. The feasibility of constructing an extra floor above or below the platform level for commercial use will also be assessed. If viable, the design for this additional floor will be included in the project without any extra payment to the consultant.

The Kharadi-Khadakwasla corridor, spanning 25.518 kilometers, will connect key residential, commercial, and IT hubs, while the 6.118-kilometer Nal Stop-Manik Baug corridor aims to improve connectivity in central Pune, easing traffic on major roads like Karve Road and Sinhagad Road. The combined estimated cost of these projects is ₹9,897.19 crore.

Maha-Metro director (works) Atul Gadgil emphasized that the central government is fast-tracking the proposal, and inter-ministerial discussions are already underway. He also highlighted the need for coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to ensure seamless development in metro-influenced areas.

This initiative reflects Maha-Metro’s vision to create modern, efficient, and commercially viable metro stations that integrate passenger amenities with sustainable urban infrastructure, setting a new benchmark for public transit in India.
