Made in India, Loved by India: Tata Punch takes the crown as India’s top selling Car
Maruti Suzuki largely dominates the Indian car market, selling notably popular models such as the WagonR, Swift, Baleno, Dzire, Fronx, Brezza, and Ertiga. Then there’s Hyundai, which manufactures passenger vehicles (PVs) such as the Grand i10 Nios, i20, Venue and Creta. However, homegrown automaker Tata Motors is giving both foreign brands a run for their money with top-selling models such as the Tata Punch, being India’s top seller.
The Tata Punch has surpassed all Japanese and Korean rivals to become India’s top seller car from January to April 2024. It outperforms competitors such as the Maruti Suzuki WagonR, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Creta, and even its older brother, the Tata Nexon.
The Punch has sold 73,121 units this year, outpacing models such as the WagonR (71,386 units) and the Baleno (66,784 units). The Brezza and Creta have achieved 62,795 and 60,393 units, respectively, while the Nexon has reached 56,803 units.

The Tata Punch comes in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) variants.
The ICE model has a 1.2-litre petrol engine (88PS and 115Nm) with 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions. The Punch CNG (73PS and 103Nm) is also available with a 5-speed manual transmission.
The EV is available in two configurations: 60kW motor (114Nm), 25kWh battery pack, and 315km claimed range (MIDC); and 90kW motor (190Nm), 35kWh battery pack, and 421km claimed range (MIDC).
The Tata Punch ICE is priced between Rs 6.13 lakh and Rs 10.20 lakh (ex-showroom), whereas the Tata Punch.ev is priced between Rs 10.99 lakh and Rs 15.49 lakh.
