Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to complete the ambitious Rs 909-crore Lion and Tiger Point development project in Lonavala by June 2027. The project includes a 125-metre-long, 6-metre-wide glass skywalk, set to be the longest in Maharashtra, connecting two iconic tourist points. Inspired by the Grand Canyon Skywalk in Arizona, US, this skywalk is expected to become a major tourist attraction.

A Grand Tourist Attraction in the Making

According to PMRDA chief engineer Ashok Bhalkar, all major clearances are in place, and the project is set to transform Lonavala into a premier tourist destination. “The work is expected to commence this year and will be completed by June 2027. The state government is likely to provide us with funds for infrastructure,” Bhalkar said.

The development is planned at Kurwande village and also includes a 90-metre-long bridge between the two points. As part of a larger tourism development plan, Rs 213.12 crore will be invested in infrastructure, while Rs 695.92 crore is allocated for public-private partnership initiatives.

Strategic Land Acquisition and Infrastructure Expansion

The project required the acquisition of 20.90 hectares of forest land, which received in-principle approval in September last year. PMRDA has already transferred Rs 5.25 crore to the forest department as net present value for the acquired land. To compensate for this, alternative land parcels in Suwadi (10 hectares) and Kondivade (11.3 hectares) have been identified.

Further, 3,378 square metres of private land acquisition is nearing completion. In addition to the skywalk, the project also includes widening an 11-km road connecting A1 Chikki to the skywalk to 45 metres and constructing an elevated freeway between Mulshi and Lonavala.

World-Class Tourist Amenities

The development plan is designed to enhance the tourist experience with state-of-the-art amenities, including:

  • A 5,000-square-metre rooftop café
  • A 1,000-seater amphitheater
  • Adventure sports facilities
  • Parking capacity for 1,600 cars and 2,000 two-wheelers

“Tenders will be floated for local and international bidders,” a PMRDA official confirmed, emphasizing the project’s potential to generate significant employment opportunities for local residents.

Transforming Lonavala into a Premier Destination

With its breathtaking views and proximity to major urban centres like Mumbai and Pune, Lonavala is poised to become a top tourist destination. Inspired by the Grand Canyon’s glass skywalk, which offers a thrilling ‘walking on air’ experience, this project aims to provide a similar exhilarating experience to visitors.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed confidence that the skywalk would boost tourism, saying, “All major clearances are in place. The project must be completed within the stipulated timeline.”

As Maharashtra’s longest glass skywalk, this architectural marvel is set to redefine tourism in Lonavala, offering unparalleled views and an unforgettable experience for visitors from around the world.
