In a bold declaration, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that India’s road infrastructure will outshine that of the United States within the next two years. Speaking at the Times Drive Auto Summit and Awards 2025, Gadkari emphasized the rapid advancements in India’s highway network, which will not only enhance connectivity but also slash logistics costs, boosting the country’s global competitiveness.

“Earlier, I said our highways would match the US, but now I confidently say that in two years, our roads will be even better,” Gadkari stated. He highlighted the drastic reduction in travel time between major cities like Delhi, Dehradun, Jaipur, and Bengaluru, thanks to ongoing infrastructure projects.

EV Growth and Tesla’s Entry

Gadkari also expressed optimism about India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, predicting that the country will surpass the US in EV adoption and manufacturing within five years. Addressing Tesla’s potential entry, he welcomed competition, saying, “It’s an open market—whoever has the capability should come, manufacture, and compete on pricing.”

Ambitious Road Construction Targets

The minister revealed an ambitious target of constructing 60 kilometers of roads daily, aiming to bring logistics costs down to single digits from the current 14-16%. This, he believes, will position India as a key player in global trade.

With such aggressive infrastructure development and a push for sustainable mobility, India’s roadways are gearing up for a transformative leap.
