HSRP Number Plate Deadline Extended in Maharashtra: New Date, Costs, and Registration Process Explained

In a significant move, the Maharashtra Transport Department has once again extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles across the state. The new deadline is now June 30, 2025, marking the third extension in recent months. This decision comes after only 18 lakh vehicles have been fitted with HSRPs so far, despite the government’s push to make them mandatory.
The HSRP initiative, aimed at enhancing vehicle security and reducing theft, has faced its share of controversies. Critics have pointed out the additional financial burden on vehicle owners, while others have raised concerns about the implementation process. Earlier deadlines of March 30 and April 30 were also extended due to low compliance rates.
How to Register for HSRP
Starting April 1, 2025, HSRPs have been made mandatory for all vehicles in Maharashtra, including those purchased before April 1, 2019. To register, vehicle owners can follow these steps:
- Visit the official Maharashtra Transport Department website: transport.maharashtra.gov.in.
- Navigate to the “Apply High Security Registration Plate Online” section.
- Click on “APPLY HSRP” and enter your vehicle’s registration number, the last five digits of the chassis number, the last five digits of the engine number, and your mobile number.
- Proceed to the payment page to complete the process.
Alternatively, vehicle owners can visit authorized centers across the state, where three private agencies have been appointed to facilitate the installation.
Cost of HSRP Installation
The cost of installing an HSRP varies depending on the type of vehicle:
- Two-wheelers and tractors: ₹450
- Three-wheelers: ₹500
- Four-wheelers and other vehicles: ₹745
The extended deadline provides vehicle owners with additional time to comply with the new regulations. However, authorities are urging citizens to complete the process at the earliest to avoid last-minute rushes and potential penalties.
