Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the ropeway on March 24, 2022. This project is being implemented as part of the ‘Pravatmala Pariyojana’ National Ropeways Development Programme.
Phase 1 of this ropeway is expected to cost Rs 645 core and be completed by 2025. The ropeway project is making significant progress toward implementing the first phases of public transportation.
The 3.7-kilometer ropeway will connect five important locations. The routes include Girja Ghar Godowlia Chowk, Rath Yatra, Kashi Vidyapith (Bharatmala Mandir), Varanasi Railway Station, and Varanasi cantonment.
This project will significantly shorten the travel time from Varanasi Junction to Godowlia, taking only 16 minutes. There will be approximately 150 gondolas in service, each holding ten passengers, with a maximum capacity of 6,000 passengers per hour. Gondolas will arrive at each of the four stations every two to three minutes, ensuring a smooth and efficient commute.
