E-Bike Taxis Approved in Maharashtra, Opening Doors to a Faster and More Affordable Commute Option; Check Cities, Fare Structure and Other Details

Mumbai commuters will soon have a new, eco-friendly transport option as the Maharashtra government has approved e-bike taxis across the state. The decision, announced by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, aims to provide an affordable, convenient, and sustainable mode of transport while also generating employment.
Key Features of Maharashtra’s E-Bike Taxi Policy
Under the newly approved policy, e-bike taxis will be allowed to operate with the following conditions:
- Minimum Fleet Requirement: Companies must have at least 50 e-bikes to offer services.
- Distance Limit: The taxis can only cover a maximum of 15 km per ride.
- Safety Measures: E-bikes must have a partition between the rider and passenger and a roof cover for monsoons.
- Employment Boost: The initiative is expected to create over 10,000 jobs in Mumbai and another 10,000 across Maharashtra.
Fare Structure & Launch Timeline
While the fare structure is yet to be finalized, Sarnaik hinted at affordable rates. Compared to rickshaws and taxis, e-bike taxi fares will be significantly lower. For instance, a ₹100 rickshaw ride may cost only ₹30-₹40 on an e-bike taxi. The government is also finalizing regulations regarding pricing and operations, with services expected to launch within one to two months.
Special Support for Auto & Taxi Drivers’ Families
In an effort to encourage adoption, the state government has announced a ₹10,000 grant for children of auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers affiliated with government-certified corporations. The remaining amount needed to acquire an e-bike can be secured through loans.
Push for Green Transport
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik emphasized that the initiative aligns with Maharashtra’s push for electric mobility. “This move will encourage the use of electric vehicles, reduce pollution, and provide an economical transport solution for passengers,” he stated.
The policy, originally sanctioned in June 2024 under the leadership of then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has now been fully approved under the current administration led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
With this initiative, Maharashtra joins a growing list of states promoting e-bike taxis as a smart urban mobility solution. Commuters can expect a cost-effective and environment-friendly alternative to traditional transport options very soon.
