Starting April 8, domestic cooking gas is set to become costlier for households across India. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday announced a price hike of ₹50 per LPG cylinder.

This price increase will impact both general consumers and beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana — a government scheme aimed at providing subsidised LPG connections to rural and low-income families.

How Much Will LPG Now Cost?

With this revision, the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for general consumers will rise from ₹803 to ₹853. Meanwhile, under the Ujjwala scheme, the price of a cylinder will increase from ₹503 to ₹553.

The new rates will come into effect from the morning of April 8, 2025.

Why The Price Hike Matters

This latest hike comes at a time when many households are already feeling the pinch of rising expenses. While the government continues to provide subsidies under the Ujjwala scheme, the ₹50 increase affects all categories of consumers equally.

Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri did not elaborate on the reasons for the hike, but such revisions are typically linked to global crude oil price trends and adjustments in subsidy calculations.

What’s Next for Consumers?

Consumers will have to shell out more for their cooking gas refills from April 8 onwards. Whether this leads to further revisions in subsidies or additional relief measures from the government remains to be seen.
