Center Fast Tracks Approval for Vanaz-Chandani Chowk, Ramwadi-Wagholi Metro Line Extensions
The Centre has fast-tracked the extension project of the Pune metro rail from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi, during the 72nd meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG), convened in New Delhi on 12th June, 2024.
The extension projects of Line 2 from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi are expected to soon receive approval from the Central Government.
This extension will connect central Pune with rapidly growing suburbs, reducing travel time and alleviating road congestion.
The Maharashtra government has already approved this extension in March this year. “The nod to extend the Pune metro rail will help in the industrial development of the city and provide an environmentally friendly mass transport system for the increasing population,” Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had said.
Details of the Pune Metro Line 2 Extensions
1. Vanaz-Chandni Chowk Section: It lies on the western side of the metro line 2 and will be a completely elevated section of 1.12 km with the following two stations:
- Kothrud Bus Depot
- Chandni Chowk
2. Ramwadi-Wagholi Section: It is the easterly section of the metro line 2, again a completely elevated section of 11.63 km comprising of 11 stations which are as follows:
- Viman Nagar
- Somnath Nagar
- Kharadi Bypass
- Tulaja Bhavani Nagar
- Ubale Nagar
- Upper Kharadi
- Wagheshwar Temple
- Wagholi
- Siddharth Nagar
- Bakori Phata
- Vitthalwadi
The total length of this elevated metro corridor will be 12.75 km and will be constructed at an estimated cost of INR 3,757 crores, reported Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
The daily ridership for the line is anticipated to reach 3.59 lakhs by 2027, and it is projected to grow to 9.93 lakhs by 2057. This extension will connect central Pune with rapidly growing suburbs, reducing travel time and road congestion, and significantly enhancing the city’s public transport infrastructure.
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) will implement the project with financial assistance of 20% from both state and central governments, while Maha-Metro will secure the remaining 60% of ₹1,935.89 crore from financial institutions.
Tender process will be initiated once the Central Government approval is obtained.
