CBSE Revamps Syllabus for Classes 10 & 12: New Skill Subjects, 9-Point Grading System, and Twice-a-year Examinations Introduced

In a major academic revamp, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced sweeping changes to the syllabus for Classes 10 and 12, focusing on skill-based learning and flexible assessment methods. The updates include new subject options, revised grading criteria, and adjustments in exam patterns.
Key Changes for Class 10 Students
Class 10 students must now choose one skill-based subject from Computer Applications, Information Technology, or Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, they are required to select either English or Hindi as a language subject, which can be taken in Class 9 or 10.
In a significant relief, students who fail in core subjects like Science, Mathematics, Social Science, or a language can now replace it with a passed skill subject or an optional language for their final result calculation.
New Additions for Class 12 Curriculum
The board has introduced four new skill-based electives:
- Land Transportation Associate
- Electronics and Hardware
- Physical Activity Trainer
- Design Thinking and Innovation
These subjects aim to equip students with practical skills aligned with industry demands. The revised syllabus now spans seven learning areas, including Languages, Humanities, Sciences, Skill Subjects, and Health & Physical Education.
Grading System & Exam Schedule Updates
CBSE has shifted to a 9-point grading system, converting marks into grades for both Classes 10 and 12. Meanwhile, Class 10 board exams will now be conducted twice a year—February and April—starting this academic year. Class 12 exams, however, will remain annual, with the 2026 session beginning on February 17.
These changes reflect CBSE’s push towards holistic education, blending traditional academics with vocational training to better prepare students for future challenges.
