A fire broke out inside a flat in a posh high-rise society in Noida early this morning, apparently due to a blast in an air conditioner in the house. The fire incident took place at Lotus Boulevard society in Sector 100. Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar Choubey confirmed that the fire was triggered by an AC blast.

“Since the firefighting systems like sprinklers, extinguishers, and hoses were working fine, the fire did not spread out much and was contained in one room of the flat,” Choubey said.

Videos on social media showed heavy smoke rising from the apartment in one of the residential towers of the society. Such incidents can occur due to various factors, often related to electrical or mechanical failures.

As summer temperatures are soaring across North India, touching 48 degrees Celsius in several parts, air conditioners have become lifesavers. However, what if your AC unit itself becomes a fire hazard? While AC fires are rare, they can still occur, as proven by the Noida AC blast. Following are some easy-to-follow tips that will make sure you and your house does not become victim to an AC blast:

  • Change Air Filters Regularly: A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the AC to work harder and overheat. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, but generally, regular change during peak usage is recommended.
  • Clean the Outdoor Unit: Debris like leaves and twigs can block the condenser coils, reducing efficiency and raising the risk of overheating. Gently spray down the unit with water to clear debris. Avoid using a power washer, as that can damage the fins.
  • Give Your AC Space to Breathe: Clear the area around the outdoor unit. It is advisable to maintain at least two feet of clearance around the unit on all sides to ensure proper airflow. Don’t store flammable materials like gasoline or paint near the unit.
  • Never Use an Extension Cord: AC units require dedicated circuits. Using an extension cord can overload the circuit and cause overheating.
  • Schedule Professional Maintenance: Ensure a qualified technician inspects wiring, checks for loose connections, and identifies potential problems before they arise.
  • Always Listen to Your AC: Unusual noises or odors can be a sign of impending danger. If your AC unit makes grinding noises, vibrates excessively, or emits burning smells, shut it off immediately and contact a technician.
