Pune traffic department introduced new U-turns at four major junctions between Kharadi and Wagholi last week, leading to confusion and congestion, especially during peak hours. The changes, implemented at Shastrinagar Chowk, Vimannagar-Wadgaon Sheri Chowk, Phoenix Mall junction, and Durga junction, were later extended to Wagholi with additional adjustments near Tata Garden, Chandanagar, and Kharadi bypass.

While officials claim the new system will improve traffic flow once commuters adapt, residents report increased dangers and delays. A regular traveler to Kharadi, said the diversions are confusing, especially for those unfamiliar with the route. “People trying to cross or turn must now enter the BRTS lane, creating chaos,” he explained.

Locals also highlight practical issues. A resident from Somnathnagar pointed out that roadside encroachments and double-parked cabs near Aga Khan Palace make U-turns difficult. Meanwhile, another resident of Kharadi raised concerns about heavy vehicles obstructing smooth movement.

DCP (Traffic) Amol Zende defended the changes, citing positive results from the first phase of the signal-free project. He assured that improvements, including tackling illegal parking and encroachments, are underway for a smoother commute in the future.
