Pune: Airport to be Connected to Various Metro Lines Across the City – Murlidhar Mohol

Pune, July 29 – In a major boost for urban connectivity, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol announced that the Pune Metro will be connected to the Pune International Airport. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been directed to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the airport metro link, Mohol confirmed after a meeting of the Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) held on Monday.
The new metro link will connect Kharadi to the airport and form a part of the larger Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi corridor. The route is expected to significantly improve access to the airport from all corners of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Mohol emphasized that Kharadi is emerging rapidly as a commercial and residential zone, making it an ideal location for an Interchangeable and Multimodal Transport Hub. “If such a hub is established in Kharadi, all metro lines will offer a seamless option to reach Pune Airport,” he stated.
Speaking about the broader connectivity plans, Mohol added that the proposal includes direct airport linkage from existing and planned metro lines such as:
- Nigdi to Swargate
- Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar
- Vanaz to Ramwadi
- Katraj to Hinjewadi (proposed)
This integration aims to ensure that residents from across the Pune district can conveniently access the Pune Lohegaon airport. “Planning for this is already underway, and PMC has been instructed to fund the DPR, while Maha Metro will handle its preparation,” Mohol said.
With Pune district’s population surpassing 10 million, Mohol stressed the need to plan long-term infrastructure, keeping a 50- to 100-year horizon in mind.
On the Purandar airport project, Mohol mentioned that land acquisition is being carried out by the Maharashtra government through the MIDC. “Sub-divisional officers have been appointed for each village, and acquisition notifications have been issued. The process will begin very soon,” he noted.
However, during the day, a group of farmers from Pargaon staged a protest at the Pune District Collector’s office, voicing their opposition to the land acquisition process for the upcoming Purandar airport.
