Pune: Truck Plunges Into 200 Feet Deep Gorge Near Katraj Tunnel; Driver Injured

Pune | April 24, 2025 – In a terrifying incident at Katraj Ghat on the Pune-Bengaluru Highway, a truck lost control and plunged nearly 200 feet into a deep gorge near the old Katraj tunnel on Thursday afternoon. The driver, identified as Vikas Balaji Rasal (32, resident of Latur), sustained serious injuries in the accident.
How the Accident Happened
The truck was heading towards Katraj from Satara when the driver reportedly lost control near the Katraj tunnel. The vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the gorge, causing significant damage to the truck and leaving Rasal critically injured.
Rescue Operation & Emergency Response
Upon receiving the alert, the fire brigade and Bharati Vidyapeeth Police rushed to the spot. Firefighters used ropes and safety gear to descend into the ravine and rescue the trapped driver. Rasal was pulled out in an injured state and rushed to Sassoon Hospital via a government ambulance for further treatment.
Truck Details & Investigation
The truck, registered as MH 12 KP 1073, was completely damaged in the crash. Authorities are investigating whether mechanical failure or driver error caused the accident.
