PMPML to Set Up EV Charging Stations for Private Vehicles to Boost Revenue

Pune, April 21, 2025 – Facing declining passenger numbers and rising operational deficits, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has announced a new initiative to set up EV charging stations for private vehicles. This move aims to generate additional revenue by leasing PMPML-owned premises to a private company, with the transport body receiving a 32% share of the earnings.
Declining Ridership Prompts New Revenue Strategies
With decreasing footfall on PMPML buses and no fare hikes in years, the transport utility is exploring alternative income sources. Alongside property development and expanding its electric bus fleet, the new EV charging stations will help offset financial losses.
Seven Locations Identified for Charging Stations
PMPML’s Joint Managing Director, Nitin Narvekar, confirmed that work is underway to establish charging points at seven PMPML-owned sites across Pune. “This initiative will not only support EV adoption but also strengthen our financial sustainability,” he said.
Residents Welcome the Move
Local EV owners, like Aundh resident Rohit Joshi, praised the decision. “More public charging points are essential for Pune’s EV growth. If PMPML benefits too, it’s a win-win,” he said.
As Pune pushes for greener mobility, PMPML’s EV charging infrastructure could play a key role in shaping the city’s sustainable transport future.
