In a much-needed initiative, Pune airport authorities and airlines have come together to ensure that passengers’ baggage arrives safely at the baggage carousel without damage. This move comes after frequent complaints from flyers regarding torn or damaged bags at the airport.

A new system has been introduced at Pune airport where baggage is now arranged neatly the moment it appears on the carousel. Special foam shock absorbers are being used to cushion the bags and prevent them from hitting the edges of the carousel with force. This careful arrangement makes it easier for flyers to pick up their luggage without jostling with others or damaged suitcases.

The initiative gained attention after a video shot by a flyer went viral. The clip showed an official using a foam block to soften the impact of the bags, while another official organized them for easy pickup. Similar systems are already in place at airports in Japan and Southeast Asia.

Airport director Santosh Dhoke confirmed to media that the system is currently in a testing phase. “Some airlines are coordinating with airport authorities to protect flyers’ luggage. We plan to enhance this system further,” he said.

The newly constructed terminal at Pune airport has five baggage carousels and two inline baggage handling systems. The airport typically handles 200 to 204 flights daily, with a record 210 flight movements on a recent Sunday – the highest ever.

An airport official emphasized the importance of proper handling right from the moment bags are removed from the aircraft until they are placed on the carousel. “We are asking airlines to focus on better baggage handling and are working on ways to improve the overall experience,” the official said.

Passengers have welcomed the move but remain skeptical about its sustainability, especially during peak hours. Businessman Sanjeeth Krishna appreciated the effort but raised concerns about baggage from two flights often being placed on the same carousel, which had earlier led to damage in his case.

An IT professional from Baner, echoed similar concerns. “There’s often a long wait for luggage. I once had to wait 35-40 minutes for my bags. I’m not sure how this new system will hold up during peak rush and crowd chaos,” he said.

As the Pune airport continues to grow in operations, these proactive measures signal a positive step toward improving passenger satisfaction and reducing baggage damage complaints.
