Pune: Walhekarwadi Residents Fall Ill Due to Contaminated Water; Surge in Diarrhoea and Vomiting Cases

Pune, April 16, 2025: A wave of illness has struck the Walhekarwadi area in Ravet, Pune, following the supply of contaminated water to several households. The water being distributed is reportedly muddy and foul-smelling, leading to a sharp increase in cases of diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, jaundice, and dizziness among residents.

The affected localities include Tukaramnagar, Gavthan area, Nisarg Society, Bhondwenagar, Shivtirth Colony, Nandanvan Colony, Ekvira Colony, Jai Malhar Colony, Shivle Chal, Chintamani Chowk, and Bijlinagar. Residents have raised serious concerns about the unsafe condition of the water and its impact on their health. Local hospitals have reported a significant surge in patients seeking treatment for waterborne illnesses.

Despite the severity of the issue, officials from the water supply department have stated that no formal complaints had been received but confirmed that an inspection of the area will be carried out and necessary steps taken.

Health officials from the local clinic have reported a noticeable rise in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting over the past few days, especially among children and the elderly. They have alerted senior authorities and assigned ASHA workers to conduct surveys in the affected neighborhoods. The water supply department has also been directed to collect samples for testing.

Social activists and residents have demanded urgent intervention, calling for immediate identification of the contamination source and the restoration of clean drinking water. Many households have reported that multiple family members have fallen ill, and in some cases, hospitalization was required.

The situation remains serious as the community awaits prompt action to resolve the water crisis and safeguard public health.
