Two ISI-Certified Helmets With Every Two-Wheeler Sold: Nitin Gadkari Proposes New Mandate

In a significant move to enhance road safety, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has proposed that all two-wheelers sold in India should include two ISI-certified helmets. The announcement, made during an event in New Delhi, has been welcomed by the Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association of India (THMA), calling it a “lifesaving measure.”
India witnesses over 4,80,000 road accidents annually, resulting in 1,88,000 deaths, with two-wheeler riders accounting for a staggering 69,000 fatalities each year. Shockingly, nearly half of these deaths occur due to riders not wearing helmets. Gadkari’s proposal aims to curb this alarming trend by ensuring every new bike or scooter comes with certified safety gear.
Industry Backs the Move
Rajeev Kapur, President of THMA, praised the decision, stating, “This is more than just a regulation—it’s about saving lives. Helmets drastically reduce fatalities, and making them mandatory with every purchase is a crucial step forward.” The move is expected to not only improve compliance but also boost helmet manufacturing, creating new business opportunities.
What Are ISI-Certified Helmets?
ISI-certified helmets meet strict safety standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), ensuring they can withstand impact and protect riders during accidents. The ISI mark guarantees that the helmet has undergone rigorous testing for durability and effectiveness. Currently, many riders use low-quality, uncertified helmets, putting their lives at risk.
If implemented, this rule could mark a turning point in India’s road safety efforts, reducing preventable deaths and injuries. The government is expected to finalize the policy after further discussions with stakeholders.
