Pune: Using Electronic Devices Including Headphones and Earbuds While Driving Passenger Vehicles to Attract Heavy Fines; RTO Implements New Guidelines

In a move to enhance road safety and reduce reckless driving, the Transport Department is set to enforce strict penalties for drivers caught using mobile phones or electronic devices like headphones or earbuds while operating passenger vehicles.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is currently developing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for government, semi-government, and private passenger vehicles. Experts will assist in creating a framework to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
The decision comes after a recent incident where a bus driver was caught watching a cricket match while driving, prompting authorities to crack down on such dangerous behavior. However, concerns have grown as private vehicle drivers, including auto-rickshaw and car operators, are increasingly seen using mobile phones or electronic devices, raising the risk of accidents and fatalities.
Following numerous complaints, officials have directed strict action against violators and ordered the formation of an expert committee to draft legal measures to curb these unsafe practices.
