The government is bringing a policy to mandate Precast Construction method for real estate firms. This method involves using readymade components manufactured off-site in controlled environments, as opposed to traditional on-site construction methods. This shift is expected to minimize waste, enhance quality control, and drastically cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Munde explained that while the approach may increase transportation costs, it will offset these expenses by reducing resource wastage and ensuring better construction standards.

The policy will apply to both private and public construction projects, offering incentives to encourage builders and contractors to adopt the new method. “Precast construction will not only help reduce air pollution but also allow construction work to continue without adversely affecting the climate,” Munde stated.

This initiative aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to curb pollution. Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mandated bakeries and eateries to switch from coal and firewood to green fuels by July. The new construction policy is part of a comprehensive roadmap being finalized by a task force dedicated to improving Mumbai’s air quality.

The move has been welcomed by industry professionals, with over 16,000 already engaging with the announcement. As the policy nears its launch, stakeholders are optimistic about its potential to transform Mumbai’s construction landscape while addressing environmental concerns.
