Initially slated for an April 17 launch, the airport’s inauguration has been rescheduled, marking a new milestone in India’s infrastructure growth.

He however made no mention of the airport’s initial inauguration date in April and just went to say that the new airport was scheduled to be inaugurated in June. There was no mention of the reason why the inauguration date was moved ahead by almost three months.

Gautam Adani shared this update about the project on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A glimpse into India’s aviation future! Visited the Navi Mumbai International Airport site today—a world-class airport taking shape. Set for inauguration this June, it will redefine connectivity & growth. A true gift to India!” He also commended the efforts of the Adani Airports team and their partners for turning this vision into reality.

The greenfield airport, developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), is a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) in a 74:26 partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in February 2018, and it has since been a cornerstone of India’s efforts to modernize its aviation infrastructure.

Built at an estimated cost of Rs 16,700 crore, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is designed to alleviate congestion at Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Once fully operational, it will feature two runways and four terminals, with the capacity to handle 90 million passengers annually after the completion of all five development phases.

Earlier, in December 2023, Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, had indicated that domestic operations were expected to begin in the second half of May, with international flights starting by the end of July. While the timeline has shifted slightly, the project remains on track to significantly boost India’s aviation capacity.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is poised to become a key hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, catering to the growing demand for air travel and reinforcing India’s position as a global aviation leader.
