Pune is set to experience a much-needed break from the intense heatwave-like conditions that have gripped the city over the past few days. With temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius in various locations, including Koregaon Park, Lohegaon, Shirur, and Dhamdhere, residents have been battling the sweltering heat. However, cloudy skies and light rain are expected to provide temporary relief, lowering the maximum temperatures.

According to Anupam Kashyapi, former head of climate forecasting at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the change in weather is due to moisture being drawn in from the Bay of Bengal, coupled with opposing wind patterns over southeastern Maharashtra and nearby areas. He stated, “This will bring clouds with light rain, accompanied by lightning and thunder, starting from March 15 onwards.”

While the respite is welcome, it may be short-lived, as summer temperatures are predicted to rise again soon. The IMD has urged residents to take precautions against heatwaves, such as avoiding outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm and staying hydrated. Nights have also been unusually warm, with minimum temperatures remaining higher than normal.

Kashyapi attributed the early onset of summer and extreme heat to the lack of winter rains. He explained, “The soil in Maharashtra, typically black cotton or red, absorbs heat more than usual. This has led to an earlier and more intense summer, with the soil unable to cool down effectively.”

As Pune braces for fluctuating weather conditions, residents are advised to stay updated on forecasts and take necessary measures to cope with the heat.
