In a groundbreaking move to combat fear and silence in the face of crises, the Gram Sabha of Pothre Nilaj village in Maharashtra’s Solapur district has introduced a unique solution: raising the index finger to summon help. This simple yet powerful gesture aims to empower villagers, especially women, children, and senior citizens, to seek immediate assistance when threatened or in distress.

The initiative, passed as a resolution on Women’s Day (March 8), addresses the pervasive atmosphere of fear caused by domestic issues, anti-social elements, and unscrupulous money-lenders. According to the resolution, anyone feeling threatened can raise their index finger to alert others nearby, who will then rush to their aid. In more serious situations, the person in need will be connected to relevant helplines, including those for women, children, senior citizens, and the police.

The brainchild of Pothre Nilaj sarpanch Ankush Shinde, the idea was conceptualized in collaboration with social activist Pramod Zinjade, known for his efforts to eradicate regressive customs in rural Maharashtra. Shinde emphasized that the Gram Sabha plans to widely publicize the initiative and has also urged the state government to introduce a dedicated WhatsApp number for real-time crisis reporting. This would allow villagers to share locations, photos, and videos of emergencies, enabling swift action by authorities.

Zinjade explained that the initiative is a response to the growing fear in society, whether due to domestic struggles, harassment by money-lenders, or threats from anti-social elements. “Raising the index finger will signal that the person needs help. Others can then inform the Gram Sevak and Sarpanch,” he said.

Pothre Nilaj, a progressive village of 6,000 predominantly farming residents, has a history of standing against social evils. In 2022, it became the first village in Solapur to ban regressive customs like removing a widow’s mangalsutra and sindoor, following a resolution by the Herwad gram panchayat in Kolhapur.

This latest initiative underscores the village’s commitment to fostering harmony, brotherhood, and safety. As the Gram Sabha works to spread awareness, the “index finger alert” system could serve as a model for other villages grappling with similar challenges.
