Pune: Purandar International Airport Work Progresses Steadily, 2872 Hectares Declared Industrial Area

The proposed Purandar International Airport in Pune is making steady progress, with 2872 hectares of land across seven villages declared an industrial area. These land parcels will be acquired by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), speeding up the land acquisition process for the airport. The announcement was made recently by MoS Civil Aviation and Pune Lok Sabha MP Murlidhar Mohol.
The airport is slated to become operational by March 2029.

Currently, Pune’s civilian flights operate from the Lohegaon Air Force Base, which faces significant limitations due to military restrictions. The shared runway and limited parking bays restrict the number of flight operations, particularly for international flights. The existing infrastructure cannot accommodate wide-body aircraft, hindering the expansion of Pune’s aviation capabilities.
To address these challenges, the government is developing a full-fledged civilian international airport at Purandar, near Pune. The project site is strategically located near villages such as Ambodi, Sonori, Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur-Munjawadi, Khanwadi, Pargaon Memane, Rajewadi, Aamble, Tekwadi, Vanpuri, Udachiwadi, and Singapur. The site is also close to the Rajewadi railway station on the Pune–Miraj–Lonand line.
The proposed airport will be well-connected by six routes, including National Highways 48 and 65, and a special ring road linking major industrial hubs like Hadapsar to the airport. This development is expected to significantly boost Pune’s connectivity and economic growth.
