Maharashtra is currently grappling with a severe heatwave, as temperatures across the state continue to climb to alarming levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for regions like Konkan, Akola, and Chandrapur, cautioning residents about potential heatwave conditions over the next two to three days. Pune, too, is expected to face near-heatwave conditions within the next 48 hours.

Rising Heatwave Threat: EHF Index Sounds the Alarm

The IMD has highlighted a concerning trend in central and western India through the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) index, which measures prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Over the past 12 days, coastal Maharashtra has experienced persistent high temperatures, making the situation increasingly severe.

On March 11, 2025, Pune and its neighboring areas recorded scorching temperatures, with Koregaon Park hitting 39.6°C, marking it as the hottest spot in the city. Other areas like Shirur (39.4°C), Talegaon (38.9°C), and Lohegaon (38.5°C) also reported unusually high temperatures. Shivajinagar recorded 36.9°C, with humidity levels dropping to 15%-28% in the afternoon, intensifying the heat stress.

Mumbai and Konkan Endure Second Heatwave of the Season

Mumbai is currently facing its second heatwave of the season, with Colaba recording a high of 36.4°C and Santacruz reaching 37.2°C. Coastal regions like Ratnagiri (34.6°C) and Panjim (34.4°C) also experienced above-average temperatures, adding to the discomfort of residents.

Vidarbha and Marathwada Bake Under the Sun

Akola recorded the state’s highest temperature on March 11, soaring to 38.8°C. Other districts in Vidarbha, including Nagpur, Bramhapuri, and Chandrapur, saw temperatures exceeding 37.5°C. In Marathwada, Osmanabad (36.6°C) and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (35.6°C) also witnessed a sharp spike in heat levels.

Pune Braces for Near-Heatwave Conditions; Relief Expected Soon

Pune is likely to experience near-heatwave conditions in the coming 48 hours. However, the IMD has forecasted some relief, with moisture from the Bay of Bengal and opposing wind patterns in southeastern Maharashtra expected to bring cloud cover and light rain starting around March 15.

Staying Safe in the Heat

With daytime temperatures hovering 1-5°C above normal for early March and nighttime temperatures also remaining unusually high, the IMD has advised residents to take precautions to stay safe. Key recommendations include:

  • Staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun
  • Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing
  • Limiting outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours
  • Using sunscreen and protective gear to prevent heat-related illnesses

As Maharashtra continues to endure this intense heatwave, it’s essential for everyone to stay vigilant, keep updated on weather forecasts, and take necessary steps to protect themselves from the scorching conditions.
