Pune, 8 March 2025: In a drastic move to recover unpaid electricity bills, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has disconnected power supply to 42,073 consumers in Pune district. The unpaid bills have surged to nearly Rs. 200 crore, the highest among all regions under the Pune Regional Division.

Over the past 35 days, MSEDCL has launched a stringent recovery drive across five districts, including Satara, Solapur, Kolhapur, and Sangli, to address the total outstanding dues of Rs. 310.84 crore. Pune alone accounts for Rs. 199.99 crore of this amount, making it the focal point of the operation.

To prevent illegal power restoration, special inspection teams have been deployed. Defaulters found using electricity through illegal means will face strict legal action under Sections 135 and 138 of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, which may include penalties or criminal charges.

Senior officials, including Pune Regional Director Bhujang Khandare and Chief Engineer Rajendra Pawar, are actively monitoring the disconnection drive and conducting inspections. Consumers are urged to clear their dues online via the MSEDCL website (www.mahadiscom.in) or the MSEDCL mobile app. For bills exceeding Rs. 5,000, RTGS or NEFT transactions are recommended.

Power supply will only be restored after outstanding dues are settled. MSEDCL has warned that continued non-payment may lead to further legal consequences.

Breakdown of Unpaid Bills and Disconnections:

  • Pune: Rs. 199.99 crore (42,073 disconnections)
  • Satara: Rs. 20.40 crore (1,920 disconnections)
  • Solapur: Rs. 44.07 crore (4,279 disconnections)
  • Kolhapur: Rs. 20.80 crore (1,490 disconnections)
  • Sangli: Rs. 24.95 crore (1,973 disconnections)

The recovery drive highlights the growing issue of unpaid electricity bills in the region and the financial challenges faced by MSEDCL. Consumers are advised to cooperate and clear their dues promptly to avoid further inconvenience.
