Pune Metro is Popular: Ridership Soars to 5.98 Crore, Network Expands Significantly Since 2022 Launch

Pune Metro has achieved remarkable growth in ridership and network expansion since its launch on March 6, 2022. Initially operating on two routes—Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Phugewadi and Vanaz to Garware College—the metro has now become a vital part of the city’s transportation system.
From March 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly ridership stood at 1.26 lakh. However, with the launch of new sections—Phugewadi to District Court and Garware College to Ruby Hall Clinic on August 1, 2023—ridership surged to 17.6 lakh per month. The subsequent Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi extension further boosted ridership to 28.28 lakh monthly. The latest addition, the District Court to Swargate section launched on September 29, 2024, has propelled the total ridership to an impressive 5.98 crore (March 2022 – March 2025).
As of March 2025, the Pune Metro has generated ₹93 crore in revenue, with a daily average ridership of 1.6 lakh. The metro ensures safe and comfortable travel with features like CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, well-lit stations, baggage scanning, and staff assistance.
On March 5, 2025, the Pune Metro celebrated its third anniversary, marking a significant milestone. Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), highlighted the metro’s role in providing safe, fast, and sustainable urban transport. He also emphasized ongoing expansion projects under Phase 1 and Phase 2, which aim to enhance connectivity across the city.
Key developments under Phase 2 include the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk corridor (1.12 km), Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi extension (11.63 km), Khadakwasla to Swargate, Hadapsar, and Kharadi corridor (25.51 km), and several other routes awaiting final approval from the Government of India.
