In a groundbreaking move to tackle traffic congestion and improve urban mobility, the Maharashtra government has announced the introduction of a state-of-the-art pod taxi system for Mira-Bhayandar and Thane-Ghodbunder. This innovative transit solution promises to revolutionize daily commutes, offering a faster, greener, and more efficient way to navigate these bustling regions.

The pod taxis will operate on elevated tracks, approximately six metres above ground level, supported by compact pillars. Each pod can carry up to 20 passengers and will zip through the city at speeds of 60-70 kmph, powered by electric motors and battery systems. Designed for 24/7 operation, the system will incorporate advanced safety features like collision avoidance technology and a 25-metre following distance between pods.

State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed the project after visiting the Futran Experience Centre at Nutran EV Mobility in Vadodara. Accompanied by the transport commissioner and senior officials, Sarnaik assessed the feasibility of the technology for Maharashtra’s urban corridors. The project is expected to transport over 15,000 passengers per hour per direction, significantly reducing traffic congestion and improving last-mile connectivity.

The pod taxi system will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring cost efficiency and timely execution. Officials estimate a three-year timeline for completion, pending necessary approvals. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has already appointed a concessionaire for the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) pod taxi project, with construction expected to begin after a one-year approval period.

As Maharashtra grapples with rapid urbanisation and increasing traffic, the pod taxi initiative offers a futuristic and eco-friendly alternative for commuters. This project not only aims to decongest busy routes but also sets a benchmark for sustainable urban transportation in India.
