This Most Fuel-Efficient Sedan Has Sold More Units Than All Other Sedans Put Together

Besides being the best seller, this sedan is one of the most fuel-efficient cars on sale in India with a claimed mileage of over 25kmpl in petrol.
The country’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India, sells two sedans at present, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, and claims that the former has more volumes than all other sedans in the industry put together.
Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the sedan segment in India with its ever-popular Dzire, a compact sedan that has outsold all other sedans in the industry combined. The latest fourth-generation Dzire, launched in November 2024, has already proven to be a massive success, reinforcing Maruti Suzuki’s grip on the market.

Maruti Dzire’s Unmatched Market Share
According to Maruti Suzuki, the Dzire holds over 50% of the sedan segment in India. In 2023, it recorded 1,57,522 unit sales, which impressively grew to 1,67,988 units in 2024, despite a generation change—an event that usually slows down sales as customers await new models.
“The Dzire has been a very powerful product. Just one sedan from Maruti has done more volumes than all other sedans by the entire industry put together. More than 50% in the sedan share, and it is building on that,” said Rahul Bharti, Chief Investor Relations Officer, Maruti Suzuki India, during the Q3 FY25 earnings conference call.

New-Gen Dzire: More Features, More Demand
The fourth-generation Dzire brings enhanced safety, efficiency, and premium features, driving increased customer interest. Interestingly, Maruti reports that the top-end variants, ZXi and ZXi+, now account for 37% of total bookings, up from 19% in the previous generation. Currently, Maruti Suzuki has 20,000 pending bookings for the new Dzire.
The new model is also the first-ever Maruti car to achieve a five-star safety rating in the Global NCAP crash tests, scoring 31.24 out of 34 points in adult safety and 39.20 out of 49 points in child safety.

Fuel Efficiency and Engine Performance
A major factor in the Dzire’s continued success is its fuel efficiency. It is among the most fuel-efficient petrol cars in India, with a claimed mileage of 25.71kmpl for the automatic variant.
The new Dzire is powered by Suzuki’s Z12E 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 81.58PS of power and 111.7Nm of torque. It comes with 5-speed manual (MT) and 5-speed automated manual (AMT) transmissions, along with a CNG variant offering 33.73km/kg mileage.

Price and Competition
Priced between ₹6,83,999 and ₹10,19,001 (ex-showroom), the Dzire competes in the compact sedan segment with rivals like Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze, and Tata Tigor. However, its dominance extends even over bigger sedans like Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, Hyundai Verna, and Honda City.
With growing demand, impressive safety ratings, and unbeatable fuel efficiency, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire remains the undisputed leader of the Indian sedan market.
