In a significant move, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that property tax rates will remain unchanged for the financial year 2025-26, marking the ninth consecutive year without a tax hike. Civic Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale approved the decision following a proposal from the tax collection department. The last increase of 10% was implemented in 2016, and since then, the PMC has maintained a stable tax structure to provide financial relief to residents.

With the PMC functioning under an appointed administrator for the past three years, policy decisions, including tax hikes, have been deferred. The administration has opted to continue with the existing tax structure, benefiting homeowners and businesses amid rising living costs and economic uncertainties.

However, the decision poses revenue challenges for the civic body. To address potential shortfalls, PMC has intensified efforts to enhance tax collection. Measures include assessing new properties, recovering pending dues, and auctioning properties with longstanding tax arrears. For the current fiscal year, PMC has set a tax revenue target of ₹2,727 crore, but collections have reached only ₹2,000 crore so far. To bridge the gap, the administration has reassigned 100 employees to the tax collection department and added 55 more personnel to accelerate recovery efforts.

The decision to maintain tax rates has been welcomed by citizens, who appreciate the financial relief. However, balancing this relief with the need for sustainable revenue remains a challenge for PMC, especially with increasing demands for better infrastructure and public services.

Citizens are encouraged to pay their taxes on time to avoid a 2% monthly penalty. Payments can be made online at https://propertytax.punecorporation.org.
