Pune is set to get a twin-tunnel underground corridor connecting Yerawada to Katraj, a move that aims to significantly reduce travel time and ease congestion in one of the city’s busiest stretches. The project received in-principle approval from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who has directed authorities to expedite the detailed project report (DPR) and feasibility study.

Modern Infrastructure for Seamless Travel

The 15-km-long underground route will be built using twin-tunnel technology, ensuring smoother traffic movement between the northern and southern parts of Pune. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) presented the proposal, with Commissioner Yogesh Mhase stating that the plan includes three lanes per tunnel to accommodate heavy traffic loads.

Fadnavis emphasized the need for modern technology to complete the project efficiently. “This tunnel will ensure seamless travel between Yerawada and Katraj, a highly congested stretch. Given Pune’s rapid expansion, innovative infrastructure is essential,” he stated.

Funding and Implementation Strategy

To fund the project without excessive land acquisition costs, the PMC, PCMC, MIDC, and PMRDA will contribute funds, ensuring completion within three years with minimal environmental impact. The underground route has been prioritized over an elevated corridor due to feasibility and long-term benefits.

Additional Infrastructure Projects Approved

Apart from the twin tunnel, the government has also sanctioned:

  • ₹636.84 crore for road networks linking the upcoming Purandar airport.
  • ₹203 crore for cement roads in industrial zones like Ranjangaon and Hinjewadi.
  • ₹1,526 crore for urban growth center road development.

Fadnavis also stressed the need to widen roads to 18 metres in newly planned city expansions while integrating water, sewage, and power infrastructure in the initial development phases.

Game-Changer for Pune’s Traffic Woes

With Pune’s rapid increase in vehicles, the Yerawada-Katraj underground corridor is expected to be a game-changer for intra-city travel. The success of this project now depends on how swiftly authorities execute the DPR and move forward with construction.
