After a five-year gap, Shein, the Chinese fast-fashion brand, is back in India, thanks to a strategic partnership with Reliance Retail. The app, now rebranded as SHEIN India Fast Fashion, is available for download on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. This marks a significant return for the brand, which was banned in 2020 alongside 58 other Chinese apps amid data security concerns and geopolitical tensions.

A New Chapter with Reliance Retail

Shein’s re-entry into the Indian market is powered by a licensing agreement with Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL). Under this deal, all Shein-branded products sold in India will be designed and manufactured locally, aligning with the Indian government’s push for self-reliance and boosting the domestic textile industry. The partnership aims to create a robust network of local manufacturers and suppliers, generating employment and supporting India’s handicraft and textile sectors.

The app, which is now hosted on Indian infrastructure, ensures that all user data remains within the country, addressing previous concerns about data security. Reliance Retail retains full ownership and control of the platform, with Shein having no access to user data.

Why Was Shein Banned?

In June 2020, the Indian government banned Shein under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, citing threats to national sovereignty and data privacy. The ban came amid heightened tensions between India and China following border skirmishes. While the app was removed from app stores, Shein products remained accessible through other e-commerce platforms not covered under the ban.

The ban left millions of Shein fans disappointed, with social media flooded with memes and emotional posts. Many users lamented the loss of affordable, trendy fashion options that Shein had become synonymous with.

What’s Different This Time?

Shein’s return comes with a twist—all products are now made in India. While this aligns with the government’s “Make in India” initiative, it also means the designs and fabrics may lack the distinct “imported” feel that once set Shein apart. The app offers free shipping on all orders and easy returns, with prices starting as low as Rs 350.

However, the Indian fashion market has evolved significantly since Shein’s exit. Brands like Urbanic, StreetStyleStore, Myntra, and Ajio have filled the gap, offering affordable and premium fashion options. Shein’s challenge now is to reclaim its position in a highly competitive market.

Will Shein Regain Its Popularity?

Shein’s earlier success in India was driven by its unique combination of affordability, exclusivity, and trendy designs. Its return has sparked curiosity, but whether it can replicate its past success remains to be seen. The brand’s reliance on local manufacturing may dilute its global appeal, but it also opens doors to cater to Indian tastes more effectively.

As the app rolls out services in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, with pan-India shipping promised soon, Shein is banking on its legacy and Reliance’s retail expertise to win back Indian consumers.

A Reliance Masterstroke

The partnership is a win-win for both Shein and Reliance. While Shein gains access to India’s massive consumer base, Reliance strengthens its foothold in the fast-fashion segment. The collaboration is expected to boost India’s textile manufacturing sector and create employment opportunities, making it a strategic move beyond just fashion.

As Shein re-enters the Indian market, the question on everyone’s mind is: Will it shine as brightly as before, or will it struggle to stand out in a crowded marketplace? Only time will tell.
