Why Are Amazon Workers Protesting?

Three months ago, Amazon had agreed to provide lump-sum benefits to warehouse workers. However, the company allegedly has not fulfilled this promise, leaving workers frustrated. For the past four years, these workers have been earning low wages and have not received additional benefits. After multiple follow-ups with government agencies, an agreement was reached, but workers claim the company has failed to honor it.

Impact on Deliveries

With the rise in online shopping, Amazon handles a significant number of orders daily. The warehouse workers’ strike will likely disrupt deliveries in Pune and Mumbai.

Workers Demand Justice

Chandan Kumar, the protest coordinator, stated that the workers had no choice but to stop work as the company ignored their legitimate demands. The protestors also accuse Amazon of violating labor laws by not following the agreement.

The Growing Gig Worker Economy

India has a large number of gig workers, including those working for e-commerce platforms. According to NITI Aayog, around 8 million gig workers are currently active in the country, and this number is expected to grow to 2.35 crore by 2029-30.

For now, customers in Pune and Mumbai should brace for possible delays in Amazon deliveries as workers continue their protest.
