Residents of Maharashtra are experiencing an unexpected surge in daytime temperatures, leaving many wondering if summer has arrived early this year. Cities like Pune have already recorded temperatures as high as 36°C, a figure more typical of summer than February. However, a slight reprieve is on the horizon, with a marginal drop in nighttime temperatures expected across the state, including Pune, between February 11 and 13.
According to Anupam Kashyapi, a noted weather scientist and former head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, there is expected dip in nighttime temperatures due to northerly winds expected to sweep across north-central Maharashtra. These winds are anticipated to reach Maharashtra and Pune during this period, following the passage of a western disturbance (WD) and before the arrival of a fresh WD in the Western Himalayan Region.
While the days remain unusually warm, the nights might bring some relief. For instance, on February 8, Jalgaon recorded the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 11°C, while Solapur sizzled at 36°C during the day.
Mumbai, too, experienced a warm day with temperatures reaching 34°C, though the nights were relatively cooler at 21.6°C.
The Regional Meteorological Center in Mumbai has predicted dry and calm weather across Maharashtra for the next few days. However, the sudden spike in daytime heat has left many residents concerned about what the coming months might bring.
As the state braces for fluctuating temperatures, experts advise staying hydrated and taking necessary precautions to cope with the unseasonal warmth.
