Pune: PCMC Seals 10 RO Plants, 7 Water ATMs; 3 Fresh Suspected GBS Cases Reported

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken stringent action by sealing ten reverse osmosis (RO) plants and seven water ATMs amid rising concerns over Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases. Officials reported that the civic body has recorded 26 suspected and confirmed GBS cases so far.

The sealed RO plants include two under regional office F, two plants and seven RO water ATMs under regional office D, one plant under regional office B, four under regional office G, and one under regional office H. Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh stated that the PCMC has initiated water sample testing at private RO plants to check for contamination.

On Saturday, three fresh suspected GBS cases were reported, bringing the total number of cases in the district since January to 183. Of these, 151 have been confirmed as GBS patients, according to Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar, Joint Director of Health Services.

The state-wide breakdown of cases includes 37 from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 88 from newly added villages in PMC areas, 26 from PCMC, 24 from Pune Rural, and eight from other districts.

PCMC Chief Engineer Pramod Ombhase warned that violators continuing operations despite closure orders will face strict action from the medical department.

Dr. Kamlapurkar added that out of 4,761 water samples collected and tested, 55 were found contaminated. Additionally, 80 serum samples have been sent to NIMHANS in Bengaluru for antiganglioside antibody testing. Doorstep surveillance has covered 46,534 houses in PMC, 24,883 in PCMC, and 13,291 in Pune rural areas.
