The Minimal Phone: An Android-Powered E-Ink Device with QWERTY Keyboard, Days-Long Battery Life, and a Focus on Reducing Distractions
In a world dominated by flashy smartphones and endless notifications, the Minimal Phone emerges as a breath of fresh air. Designed to help users cut down on distractions, this Android-powered device combines a 4.3-inch E-Ink display with a physical QWERTY keyboard, offering a unique blend of functionality and simplicity.
The Minimal Phone, developed by the aptly named Minimal Company, began as a crowdfunded project in early 2024. Its standout feature is the E-Ink display, which not only reduces eye strain but also significantly extends battery life. Paired with a 3,000mAh battery, the company claims the device can last for days on a single charge—a rare feat in today’s smartphone market.
Under the hood, the Minimal Phone is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity G99 chipset, offering up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, expandable via a T-Flash card. While it may not compete with high-end smartphones in terms of raw power, its focus is on efficiency and reducing screen time. The device runs on Android 14, allowing users to download their favorite apps, but its E-Ink display naturally discourages excessive usage.
The design is reminiscent of the Blackberry era, with a full QWERTY keyboard at the bottom of the device. This makes it ideal for those who miss the tactile feel of physical keys. The phone also includes a 16MP rear camera, a fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port. However, connectivity is limited to 4G, which might be a drawback for some users.
Originally slated for an August 2023 release, the Minimal Phone faced multiple delays, leading some to doubt its existence. However, the company has now started shipping units to Indiegogo backers in the order they were purchased.
The base variant of the Minimal Phone that comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at $399 (approx. Rs 34,500), while the 8GB RAM and 256GB version can be purchased for $499 (approx. Rs 43,200).
The Minimal Phone is a niche product aimed at those seeking a simpler, less distracting digital experience. While it may not replace your primary smartphone, it’s a compelling option for anyone looking to reclaim their focus.
