Pune, 1st October 2024: The arrival of fresh red onions has led to a drop in onion prices at Pune’s Market Yard. Wholesale prices for old onions have decreased by ₹6 per kg compared to last week. Fresh onions are now being sold between ₹20 and ₹35 per kg, depending on their quality.

Retail onion prices have also dropped significantly. Last week, onions were priced between ₹70-₹80 per kg in retail markets, but they are now selling for ₹50-₹60 per kg. The reduction in prices comes after a surge in demand from across the country, following crop damage in South Indian states, which had initially pushed up prices.

On Sunday, September 22nd, approximately 70 trucks of onions arrived at the market. By the following Sunday, September 29th, the number of arrivals increased to 100 trucks, including 10 trucks of fresh onions. These new onions have been arriving over the past few days, with two to three trucks coming from Hubballi, Karnataka, and others sourced locally from Purandar taluka in Pune.

Experts predict that if the weather remains dry, more high-quality onions will enter the market within the next four to five days, leading to further price decreases. With the influx of new onions, the supply of old onions has also increased, contributing to the drop in prices. Last week, old onions were being sold for ₹44-₹48 per kg in the wholesale market, but prices have now fallen to ₹35-₹42 per kg.
