Pune: PCMC to embark on major road widening and infrastructure projects to ease traffic congestion
Pune, September 21, 2024: With the growing traffic and urban expansion in Pimpri Chinchwad, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has introduced a comprehensive road development plan to address the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.
As part of this initiative, the Harit Setu project has been implemented to create a network of modern roads based on international standards. This ambitious project is supported by global organizations, including Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI), with expert mentors attached to guide the project.
One of the major highlights is the construction of a 26.40-meter-wide subway at Rakshak Chowk on Kivle Road, aimed at reducing traffic congestion on the Sangvi-Kivle road. This subway is expected to ease traffic flow, saving both fuel and time for commuters.
Key Highlights of the Harit Setu Project:
- Approval: PCMC’s Standing Committee has approved the Harit Setu project, set to begin on September 20.
- Goal: The project aims to create a modern, sustainable road network that enhances safety and efficiency.
- Pilot Phase: The initial phase focuses on five major roads in the Nigdi-Pradhikaran area.
- Features: Improvements include better road safety, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, public transport integration, reduced traffic congestion, and pollution control.
- Funding: Partially funded by a green bond worth ₹200 crores.
- Global Support: Expert guidance from Bloomberg Philanthropies and GDCI.
- Last Mile Connectivity: The project encourages seamless connectivity with the Pune Metro, Railway, ST, and BRT systems.
