Maharashtra Weather: Monsoon to Continue with Increased Rainfall Predicted

The rains in Maharashtra may have taken a brief break, but the monsoon season is far from over. Weather experts predict a resurgence in rainfall across the state, with several regions expected to see increased precipitation starting from late September.

Anupam Kashyapi, the former head of the weather forecasting division at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, has stated that the rains are likely to pick up again across Maharashtra, including Pune, from September 20. This increase in rainfall is expected to last for 5-6 days, driven by moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and the likely formation of an upper air cyclonic circulation (UAC) over Vidarbha and South Chhattisgarh.

Weather Advisory

• Kashyapi advises residents to avoid standing in open areas or under trees during thunderstorms, as the period is likely to bring lightning and thunderstorms.
• The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Maharashtra is expected to be delayed due to the formation of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal around September 23. Consequently, the monsoon is unlikely to withdraw from the state before early October.

Extended Range Forecast

KS Hosalikar, head of IMD Pune, provided a detailed four-week rainfall forecast:

• Week 1 (starting Sept 19): Near normal rainfall in parts of Northwest and Central India, with below normal rainfall over Eastern and Northeastern India, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and the Konkan-Goa region.
• Week 2: Above-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of India, with near-normal rainfall in the Northeast and Tamil Nadu.
• Week 3: Above-normal rainfall in Central, Northwest, Eastern, and Northeastern India, with near-normal conditions in the southern regions.

Pune’s Rain Outlook

Pune’s Shivajinagar area has experienced only 21.1mm of rain so far in September, with no day recording double-digit rainfall. However, Vineet Kumar, a noted weather scientist, emphasized that Pune and Mumbai are expected to experience substantial rainfall after September 22. According to the IMD’s extended range forecast, the monsoon may not withdraw from these regions until at least October 15.

Temperature Update

• The minimum temperature in Maharashtra over the past 24 hours was recorded at 15.6°C in Mahabaleshwar, while Akola recorded the maximum temperature of 34.1°C.

Regional Forecasts

• The Regional Meteorological Center has predicted thundershowers at isolated places in Marathwada, accompanied by gusty winds (30-40 km/h) and moderate rain.
• Vidarbha will also witness thunderstorms and gusty winds, but no heavy rainfall is expected in any part of Maharashtra over the next few days.
