Varandha Ghat, an essential road connection between Pune and Konkan, has been closed for all traffic starting June 26, 2024, until August 31, 2024. This decision was announced by Pune’s Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents due to landslides and other monsoon-related incidents.

During the monsoon season, Varandha Ghat experiences heavy rainfall, leading to frequent landslides, falling trees, road collapses, and mudslides. To mitigate the risk of untoward incidents and ensure the safety of motorists, the administration has decided to stop all traffic through this ghat. This closure includes both heavy and light vehicles, with frequent red and orange alerts issued by the Meteorological Department signaling the severity of the weather conditions.

The traffic on the Bhor-Mahad route through Varandha Ghat was initially restarted on May 30, but recurring landslides necessitated its closure once again. This ghat, located on Major State Highway No. 15 (New Notified Pandharpur- Bhor- Mahad National Highway No. 965 DD), is a crucial link for citizens traveling between Pune and Konkan. With its closure, commuters will need to utilize alternative routes.

Alternative Routes for Motorists:

  1. To Pune: Rajewadi Phata-Mangaon-Nizampur Road-Tamhani Ghat-Mulshi Pirangut Pune.
  2. To Kolhapur: Rajewadi Phata-Poladpur-Khed-Chiplun-Patan-Karad-Kolhapur route.

These routes will help maintain connectivity between Pune and other regions during the closure period. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and remain updated on weather alerts and road conditions.
