Pune: New Airport Terminal Access Road To Be Widened – Murlidhar Mohol
Pune’s newly inaugurated airport terminal commenced operations on July 14, 2024, after a four-month delay. The terminal, spanning 51,595 square meters and costing Rs 423 crore, aims to enhance the city’s air connectivity. It features 10 aerobridges, five baggage carousels, 34 counters, and 25 self-check-in stations, adorned with murals reflecting the region’s culture.
However, connectivity issues have surfaced immediately. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and local MP, Murlidhar Mohol, conducted a review meeting addressing road connectivity concerns around the airport. He instructed PMC Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale and Pune Airport Director Santosh Dhoke to explore road-widening possibilities and alleviate traffic congestion.

Santosh Dhoke clarified that the areas outside the airport premises fall under PMC jurisdiction, limiting their direct involvement. This bureaucratic boundary complicates immediate action on traffic issues plaguing the airport’s vicinity. The delay in operational commencement and subsequent connectivity challenges highlight growing pains for Pune’s aviation infrastructure expansion. Residents and airport officials alike anticipate collaborative efforts between airport authorities and local governance to mitigate traffic bottlenecks and streamline access.
Despite the road connectivity challenges, the new terminal has enhanced the passenger experience with its modern amenities and cultural embellishments. As Pune Airport aims to become a pivotal hub in western India, resolving these infrastructure hurdles remains critical to its operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.
